Gregory the son of Betty J.S. Parrish of St Petersburg Florida and James F. Hankins, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 1, 1968 in Jacksonville Florida. He arrived in Vietnam on November 2, 1968 where he was assigned to and served with H&S Company, BLT (Battalion Landing Team) 3/26, 9th MAB, FMFPac.

Upon completion of Operation BOLD MARINER, on February 10 the BLT was deployed by helicopter landing in the "Arizona Territory" in Quang Nam Province and began to participate in Operation TAYLOR COMMON.

On February 23, during an engagement with the enemy in the vicinity of the Nam An village complex LCpl Gregory Hankins was killed in action by fragmentation wounds from a hostile grenade.
