Debbie had just celebrated her 15 year anniversary at QUALCOMM, where she was known for "doing whatever it takes to get the job done".
She worked for Klein Gilhousen, one of the co-founders of QUALCOMM for all of her 15 years. She supported the original team that developed QUALCOMM's famous CDMA (Code Divisional Multiple Access), that's used in most phones today in the US and around the world.
She was known as "Mom" to these team members because of how she supported and took care of them. She also took a passionate interest in making sure that QUALCOMM's history was documented. She had collected "artifacts" for a company museum and has been working with a writer on a book about QUALCOMM.
In this last year, she had been very instrumental in starting a series of technical training courses for engineers and regulatory personnel in underdeveloped countries of the world through the United States Technical Training Institute (USTTI) based in Washington, DC. This has resulted in two groups of students to date spending a week at Montana State University, studying telecommunications technologies. With her knowledge of history and "getting the facts straight", she will be greatly missed.
Besides her work, she was a dog lover. She was on early committees to help create leash free areas around San Diego, specifically Morley Field where she took her beloved dog Lady. She was also involved in helping Lithuanian orphans and donated to many different Lithuanian relief funds.
She was preceded in death by her father, Chester Degman, and her mother, Ann Degman, and is survived by her husband, Larry Larson, her dear friend, Shawn Alley, and a host of others whose lives she brightened by her presence.
There will be a Memorial Service for Debbie on Monday, June 28, at 4pm at El Camino Memorial Park in the Sorrento Valley Chapel, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations to: LCRA (Lithuanian Catholic Religious Aid), 64-25 Perry Ave, Maspeth, NY 11378 or Humane Society of Gallatin County Animal Shelter, 2125 N. Rouse Ave, Bozeman, MT 59715. Published in The San Diego Union Tribune on June 24, 2004
