Hugh H. Field (c. 1811-c. 1890/97), was the third son, and sixth of eleven children born to Jeremiah Field (c.1764-1830) and his wife Eleanor Sherwood (1776-1859) of Randolph County, North Carolina. His paternal grandparents were Colonel William Field, Jr. and his wife Lydia Elswick, and his maternal grandparents were Daniel Sherwood III and his wife Frances Linthicum. Various sources give Hugh's middle name as Hamlin, Hamel or Hamilton.

When Jeremiah died in 1830, he left Hugh a one hundred acre tract of land. Sometime in the early 1830s, Hugh appears to have traveled to Mississippi, perhaps leading a group of pioneers from NC. (His household in the 1840 census of Leake Co., Miss. consisted of 6 males age 20-29, 1 female of the same age, 6 children and 5 slaves.)

By 1850, Hugh and his wife Catherine, his brother Jeremiah and Jeremiah's wife Martha (who was Catherine's daughter by her Rutherford marriage), and some of Hugh's children, Lucy, Jeremiah, Sarah, and John, were listed together in Simpson County, Miss. Hugh was a millwright, with real estate valued at $1200. Jeremiah was also a millwright. (I actually think John was his stepson, John B. Rutherford).

By 1860, Hugh was in Clarke Co., Miss., a miller, with $6600 in real estate, and $5000 personal estate. His first wife Catherine had died, and he had married Margaret A. Bullock, born c. 1835 in Kentucky, on 19 Sept. 1854, in Rankin Co., Miss. (I just found the marriage record...and I found it on their anniversary!) The children living in the household still (listed only by initials) are Lucy, Jeremiah, Sarah and Margaret (Only daughter of Margaret Bullock.)

In 1868, Hugh married for a third time to Ellen M. Eldridge at Holly Springs, Marshall Co., Miss. In 1870, they were living in the household of Sarah S. Powell, 63, in Holly Springs, Hugh was listed as a lumber merchant with real estate valued at $3000.

Sometime around 1874, Hugh and his family moved to California. (Daughter Alice was born in Miss. in Sept. 1872 or 3, and son Alfred was born in Ca. in April 1875). They were living at Chico, San Bernardino Co., Ca. in 1880, but around 1881, they moved to Alpine, San Diego Co., near daughter & son in law Lucy and Nelson "Nick" Overmier. The last reference I've found is that the Field family were still residents of Alpine, CA in 1889. Hugh was registered to vote in 1890. He must have died sometime between 1890 and 1898. Ellen was listed as owning the land patent in 1898, and she was listed as a widow in 1900. I also assume Hugh was buried here, as his son in law and neighbor Nelson Overmier was buried here in 1891.

Hugh's first wife Catherine had been married to James L. Rutherford (d. 1835) who shows up in the 1830 census of Hinds Co., Miss., and had four children of this marriage, who would have become Hugh's stepchildren when he married their mother in the 1830s. These children were:

James L. Rutherford (1826-aft. 1910) m. Martha in 1860, lived in Jackson, Hinds Co., Mississippi. Five children.

Martha Leah Rutherford (1829-aft. 1900) m. Jeremiah Field (c. 1818-aft. 1880, Hugh's brother) lived in Copiah Co., Mississippi. Six children.

Catharine Amandaville Rutherford (1832-1913) m. Dr. Barnabas Paul Funchess (1828-1910). They moved to Kansas in 1871, in Bentonville, Arkansas in 1891. Four children.

Dr. John B. Rutherford (1834-1907) m. Justina Martin (1843-1910), they lived in Kansas for a time, and died in San Diego, California, both are buried here. Four children.

I believe Hugh and Catherine had three children:

1. Lucy J. Field (c. 1837/8-1932) m. Nelson Overmier (1830-1891) in 1875. No children. Lived & died in San Diego Co., California.

2. Jeremiah Benton Field (c. 1840/1-bef. 1880) married Sarah A. Bullock (c. 1841) in 1869, lived & died in Copiah Co., Mississippi. Two sons, Walter Shelby Field and Hugh Bullock Field, who both lived in San Diego for a time. I expect Jeremiah's wife was related to his stepmother, Margaret Bullock.

3. Sarah S. "Sallie" Field (c. 1843-aft. 1930) never married, living with her half sister Catharine in Kansas in 1875, with her half brother John Rutherford in 1880. She was living in Holton, Jackson Co., Kansas in 1930.

I'd had a John B. Field listed as a son of Hugh, per the 1850 census, but I think this was actually a reference to John B. Rutherford, his stepson.

Of Hugh's second marriage to Margaret A. Bullock (c. 1835, Kentucky, d. before 1868, Mississippi) there was one daughter born:

4. Margaret Eleanor L. "Maggie" Field (1856/8-1948) she married her cousin William A. Field (1852-1933, son of William Field & Cleopatra Henley) around 1887, and they lived for many hears in Grass Valley, Nevada County, California. After his death, she came to live in San Diego with her nephew, William Bullock Field.

Of the third marriage to Ellen M. Eldridge (1838-1914) there were five children born, four living in 1900, but I only have four names:

5. Emma Dougherty Field (1869-1957) never married, was a school teacher, died in San Diego.

6. Hugh H. Field, Jr. (1871-1935)

7. Alice M. Field (1872/3-1962) never married, was a school teacher, living with her sister Emma in 1940.

8. Alfred Sherwood Field (1875-1924).
