SS Manchuria, built by W. Gray & Co. Ltd., West Hartlepool in 1905 ......was a British steamer of 2997 tons. On October 17th, 1917, Manchuria, on a voyage
from La Goulette to West Hartlepool with a cargo of iron ore, was sunk by
the German submarine U-53 (Hans Rose), 60 miles northwest of Ushant (Ouessant). 26 persons were lost. (Jan Lettens)
