The following information is courtesy of the 100 Years Challenge:
" ... Built in 1909, S.S. Artist was a passenger and cargo ship. During the Great War she transported troops as well as goods, and on the day of her sinking she was on her way from Wales to Alexandria with a shipment of coal. After being torpedoed, an SOS was sent out stating that she was sinking fast – when the auxiliary patrol craft reached the area, nothing could be found. Some of the crew had managed to get into lifeboats, but in the heavy winter gale which was raging, some were lost at the outset, including Cadet Davenport. It was three days before the British cargo steamer S.S. Luchana came across some of the crew in a lifeboat – a number of original survivors had died of frostbit, and all were suffering from exposure.
The Secretary of the Admiralty made a statement, part of which reads: "Those of them that perished during three days of bitter exposure were murdered, and to pretend that anything was done to ensure their safety would be sheer hypocrisy. The pledge given by Germany to the United States not to sink merchant ships without ensuring the safety of the passengers and crews have been broken before, but never in circumstances of more cold-blooded brutality."
