From an early age, Mark had a deep sense of purpose, devotion, and service. He grew up in North Baltimore, Ohio and completed high school at Divine Word Seminary in Perrysburg, Ohio. After studying to become a monk at The Abbey of the Genesee in New York, Mark moved to Chicago in the early 80s. During his work in the research department at the Howard Brown Health Center, he also cared for people in the early years of the AIDS crisis at Bonaventure House.
While in Chicago, Mark met Fred Beal, the love of his life. In 2001, they moved to Portland and Mark worked with Protocol Crisis Hotline and Compassion & Choices, where he was an end-of-life counselor, offering care and understanding during his client’s final days. A practicing Buddhist, Mark was a devoted member of Portland Buddhist Priory in Southeast Portland, where he received lay ordination and was the past president of the Sangha.
His lifelong passions were classical music, gardening, animal welfare, and supporting the environment. Mark had a peaceful death, with his husband Fred, their four dogs, brother Don, and a compassionate nurse from Providence Hospice by his side.
Mark obtained a Bachelor’s degree at DePaul University and a Masters of Social Work at Loyola University. He is survived by his husband Fred Beal; his brother and sister- in-law Don and Betty Ferguson; his sister and brother-in- law Judy and Greg Archer; and his rescue dogs, Reilly, Violet, Julie and Sunny.
A memorial ceremony will be held on October 4, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. at the Episcopal Parish of St. John the Baptist.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Providence Portland Cancer Center or the Portland Buddhist Prio
