OBITUARY:
Mattie L. Scott, affectionately known as “Granny” went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 13, 2015. Born to the late Dennis and Lucy Espy on December 21, 1918, she was the eldest of four girls. She also had three brothers.

Baptized at just twelve years old, Mattie would go on to serve the St. James CME Church in LaVergne, Tennessee, for 84 years with both great faith and diligence. She was widely recognized as a pillar in the community. She was a “Living Testimony” whose love of the Lord and her family shined brightly every day and night of her life.

Mattie had a passion for hats, and her ensemble was not complete without it and she matched from head to toe. Her favorite pastime was listening to the music of Lee Williams and the Williams Brothers, and she always looked forward to family gatherings, especially those around the annual Mother’s Day celebration. She was the matriarch that everyone looked too for wisdom. Mattie wore her age well and was proud and felt truly blessed to be 96 years young.

Mattie leaves behind to cherish her loving memory: two devoted daughters, Christine (Charlie-deceased) Murray, Jr. and Rosemary (Frank) Burks of Dayton, Ohio; two devoted sons, James C. (Carmella Utley) of LaVergne, Tennessee and Calvin (Joy Bartee) Scott, Sr. of Smyrna, Tennessee; special daughter, Sharron Hall of Louisville, Kentucky; one sister, Johnnie Bryant of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Scott of Chicago, Illinois and Juanita Espy of Washington, DC; six grandchildren, Michelle (Harry) Hollins, Sr., Tanisha (Brian) Bayless, Natoshia Burks, Aisha (Joseph) Houser II, Calvin Scott, Jr. (Shain Pounds), Scott, Jr. and Courtney Scott; twelve great grandchildren, Camisha Hollins, Nichole (Fred) Sandifer, LaQueta Hollins, Tammyra (Luis) Bradshaw, Talia Law, Henry Law III, Harry Hollins, Jr., Tariq Burks, Mykala Bayless, Joseph F. Houser II, Warren D. Houser, and Serenity Rose Houser; eight great – great grandchildren, Maieshia Hollins, Samari Sandifer, Samya Sandifer, Alana Law, Mireya Bradshaw, Alayah Bradshaw, Jemmia Law, and Jaxson Boger; many nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, friends and special friends, Cecil Trimble, Sister Frances Gilcrease, Sister Carrie Nelson, Sister Berthene Webb, Sister Delores Earley, Sister, Virginia Singleton and Sister Willa Miller.
