Ellen (Badgley) Black died peacefully May 21, 2011 at Heritage Estates in Gering, NE, a few months short of her ninety-sixth birthday.

Ellen was born in Scottsbluff, NE on July 3, 1915, the only child of Jerome and Helen Badgley. She grew up in Gering and attended the University of Nebraska.

In 1936 she married Dr. Eugene Black, who served as a MASH doctor in the Pacific Theater in World War II. After the war they moved to Evanston, IL, where her eldest two children were born and where her husband established his medical practice. Later the couple moved to Omaha where Dr. Black taught at the University of Nebraska Medical School and where her third child was born.

She came to Scottsbluff in 1951 and reared her children here. Circumstances required her to rear them alone. She did so by learning how to stretch a dollar to the breaking point, and by teaching her children that the important things of life cannot be bought, but are free to those who know how to find them. She supported her family by serving as executive secretary at the local office of Nebraska (formerly Consumers) Public Power District for twenty-five years until her retirement in 1976.

After retiring she moved to Omaha where she took full advantage of the cultural events available in a metropolitan area. She returned to Scottsbluff-Gering in 2009, and lived at Heritage Estates until her death.

Ellen was a very elegant lady who loved fine china and beautiful things. She was a wonderful cook, loved to set a beautiful table, and was very knowledgeable about music and literature. Sundays in Scottsbluff meant classical music on the record player. Ellen served as President of the Scottsbluff-Gering Community Concert Association.

While in the Chicago area she met classical composer Sergei Rachmaninoff and was acquainted with Twilight Zone producer Rod Serling. Mr. Serling lived temporarily with Ellen and her husband before he became famous as a writer. She was a devout Episcopalian and an active member of St. Andrew’s (now St. Francis’) Episcopal Church in Scottsbluff, and, so long as her health permitted it, of All Saints Episcopal Church in Omaha.

She will always be loved by her children Peter, Catherine and Elizabeth.

Cremation, burial unknown. Services in Omaha, NE.
