Dennis was the son of John J. Murphy and Ann T. Murphy of Copiague New York and he enlisted in the US Marine Corps on August 5, 1968 in Brooklyn. He arrived in Vietnam on January 31, 1969 where he was assigned to and served with the 1st Force Recon Company, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On June 15, the Company was assigned the mission to conduct deep reconnaissance operations by III MAF (Marine Amphibious Force)and on June 17, a six man team was inserted by helicopter approximately 30 kilometers in a mountainous area southwest of Thuong Duc near Hill 786 in Quang Nam Province.

On the next day the patrol spotted two NVA moving down a trail and quickly engaged them, then found themselves being surrounded by the enemy. Calling in support, fixed wing aircraft arrived on the scene while the men where engaged in a fire fight until a helicopter arrived to extract them under fire. Two Marines were wounded during the action and PFC Murphy was killed by an enemy gunshot wound.
