Clarion Democrat, October 27, 1887

Sunday, October 23, Mr Casper Hergenroether was buried in St. Michael's Cemetery (Fryburg, PA). His sudden and unexpected death shocked the whole community. Deceased, who was an old man of 68 years, brought dinner to his son who was digging limestone on the Bauer farm near Jimtown(Marble). The son had just begun to drill a hole in the limestone rock and the old gentleman wanted to make himself useful by holding the drill whilst the son was using the sledge. Suddenly the ground, a six foot high wall, caved in and buried the father, whilst the son saved himself by quickly jumping. In a few minutes, Mr Hergenroether was pulled from under the ground - a corpse. The force of the hard, lumpy soil had been so great that it had smashed his head and left the drill sticking in the hole.

Casper Hargenrader was married in 1847 in St. Michael's Church, Fryburg to Mary Ann Graner, daughter of Joseph and Marie (Denzlinger) Graner.

April 2, 1849 Casper bought 50 acres of land, including appurtenances, in Washington Township, Clarion County, PA for consideration of $350 from John Reynolds and James Buchanan, residents of Lancaster PA. This James Buchanan was later to become the fifteenth president of the United States. This farm is located at Marble, PA on Route 208 on Hargenrader Lane.

Casper and Mary Ann were the parent's of nine children, four of whom died before reaching maturity. One of their granddaughters related that one of the two Mary's died from eating poison berries while out picking teaberries. Apparently this was the second Mary since the first died in January when there would have been no berries. Two of the children lived to remarkable old ages. Henry died at 101 and Susan died at 99.

Casper was tragically killed in an accident at a limestone bank at the age of 68.

Casper's will was registered November 4, 1887 in Will Book D, p.164 at the Clarion County Courthouse.
