Obituary for Stephen Henry Austin
Stephen Henry Austin
Dec. 7, 1941 — Sept. 13, 2015
Stephen Henry Austin, 73, passed away early Sunday morning, Sept. 13, 2015, at his home.
Steve was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to John and Opal Austin on Dec. 7, 1941. As a youth, he often worked at his mother's restaurant and bakery before entering the U.S. Air Force in 1959 which brought him to Camp Adair. He eventually met the love of his life, Mary Harman; they were united in holy matrimony on July 18, 1964, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albany.
After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Steve worked for the Albany Democrat-Herald from 1963 - 1967 where he earned his apprenticeship. He then worked for the Statesman Journal from 1967-1974 and became a journeyman. His bosses were amazed at how quickly and accurately he could complete each job assigned to him. He loved this type of work but saw the changes coming in the industry and chose to make a career change all while being the general contractor on his new home that he and Mary would share for the next 41 years of their marriage. In 1974 he began to work for Pacific NW Bell, which eventually became U.S. West, and Qwest until he retired in May 2002.
Steve was a proud husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who really enjoyed spending time and playing games with his grandchildren. Though he didn't always say it he reveled in their accomplishments. From his experience working with his mother during his youth, he had a great love for all things culinary and enrolled in the LBCC culinary program which he enjoyed immensely. From then on Steve prepared the finest meals for family gatherings. His other hobbies included woodworking, wine making, camping, reading, computers, volunteering his time at church, hanging out with the guys at Mike's Peppertree, and, of course, cooking.
He was beloved by many, but especially by his children and adoring wife.
Steve is survived by Mary, his wife of 51 years; children Barbara (Chuck) Venard of Copperas Cove, Texas, Cathy (Steven) Sigmon of Albany, Paul (Melissa) Austin of Albany, Greg (Lori) Austin of Gresham, and Tom (Jennifer) Austin of Albany; 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Steve has two surviving brothers, Bob and Bill, both of St. Louis, Missouri.
Steve was preceded in death by his mother and father; brothers Mike and John; and sisters Mary, Carol and Henrietta.
A visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at AAsum-Dufour Funeral Home. A recitation of the rosary will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18, followed by Mass and celebration of life at noon at St Mary's Catholic Church in Albany. Burial will follow at Palestine Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to Options Pregnancy Resource Center in Albany, Medical Teams International or Catholic Community Services.
