Ms. Hughes died Sept. 10, 2015, at Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Brenham. She was born March 23, 1938, in El Monte, Calif., and as a young child moved to Sturgis, Mich., where she lived until she married and briefly resided in California, New York and Germany, but ultimately called Copperas Cove home. She recently moved to the town of Brenham to live near one of her daughters, Mona.
She worked for many years with the Department of Veterans Affairs in Temple and as a government services employee in California, Germany and Fort Hood. Known for never meeting a stranger, her sense of humor, gravelly voice and for her affection for and collection of mice figurines, many knew her by the nickname of “Mousie.”
The love of her life were her children whom she took enormous pride in chatting about and updating friends and neighbors about their successes. She loved to spend time knitting, caring for her yard, spending time with her friends and was an avid participant with AARP and the Red Hat Society. She will be missed by her family, friends and former co-workers having made a lasting impression with those that knew her.
Recurring bouts with ailing health never seemed to keep her down, always remaining optimistic, loving, and friendly she will be missed by all of those who knew her and were the recipients of her little hugs and friendly jabs.
Ms. Hughes was preceded in death by her husband, John “Jack” Walsh of Copperas Cove; parents, Mary Alberta and Cloyd Coohon of Rising Star; brothers, Carl, David and Phillip Coohon; sister, Phyllis McFall; and son, Dennis Webb.
