Fr. James A. Culver passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at the Eastern Star Home in Oriskany. He was born September 12, 1925, in Utica, the son of James and Agnes McCann Culver. He was a graduate of LaSalle Institute in Troy and attended Niagara University before graduating from St. Andrew's Minor Seminary and St. Bernard's Major Seminary. Fr. Culver served his country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater from 1943-1946. He was ordained February 2, 1955, and came to Sacred Heart in Utica. He was transferred to St. Paul's Church in Rome on July 1, 1963. On July 1, 1971, he became Pastor of St. John's Church in North Bay. He later became Pastor of Sacred Heart in Utica on July 1, 1976, and remained there until his retirement on July 1, 1995. He also spent many summers as the summer assistant at St. Anthony's in Inlet. He had been priest in residence at St. Peter's Church in Rome since September of 1995. He is survived by a sister, Denyse Barnes, of Lutherville, MD; two nieces, Deidre (Steve) Seipp, of Lutherville, MD, and Darrilynn Griffin, of Lutherville, MD; two nephews, Jamie Barnes, of Lutherville, MD, and Kevin (Zoa) Barnes, of Baltimore, MD; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by a brother-in-law, Thomas Barnes, and a nephew, William Barnes. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 11 a.m., at St. Peter's Church in Rome with the Most Reverend Bishop Robert J. Cunningham as the main Celebrant. Interment will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery in Dewitt. Fr. Culver will Lie in State at St. Peter's Church on Tuesday, April 7, 2015, from 4-7 p.m., followed by a Mass of Jesus Christ the Eternal High Priest at 7 p.m., with the Rev. Robert Weber as the Homilist. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Fr. Culver's name may be made to the St. Peter's Church Memorial Fund. Arrangements have been entrusted to Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome.
