He was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. He was a graduate of Miami Southwest High School. He attended Miami Dade Community College.
Lael was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a retired police officer and founder of All Police Charities; Sergeant at Arms for the Miami Dade County Commissioner's Office; Assistant to Mayor Stephen P. Clark of Miami Dade County.
He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer E. Schumacher and sister, Janis D. Schumacher.
Lael is survived by his wife, Carol B. Schumacher; daughters, Jennifer L. Schumacher, Cheryl Ann Schumacher and Melissa D. Vazquez; mother, Laverne P. Schumacher, brother, Matthew J. Schumacher; sister, Diane K. Ogg; grandson, Aiden M. Vazquez and granddaughter, Charlotte D. Vazquez.
