Terry and community were greatly shocked Monday morning to learn of the passing of Sheriff Richard P (Bert) Lane, 53, who died suddenly from a heart attack at his home Sunday evening, November 7.
R P Lane, son of Patrick and Ida Mae Lane, was born on October 10, 1890 at Sterling NE. He attended grade and high school at Deweese, NE and was also a member of the Christian church there. In 1910, he came to Montana and in the vicinity of Prairie County, he worked for C K cattle company riding the rough strings and he also broke horses for other rancher.
On July 5, 1917, he married Florence E Smith. To this union were born three daughter, Mrs Kathleen (Kay) Timmerman of Seattle WA, Mrs Ida MaeKnapp of Glendive, andMrs Annabelle Fields of Tacoma, WA. He is survived by his wife, 3 daughters, one brother, and one sister, Mrs Charles Johnson of Bellingham WA.
On 1-1 1935, he became sheriff of Prairie county, which position he retained until his death. His continued re-election to that office is sufficient evidence in itself of his popularity and capabilities in executing the duties of sheriff and of his public service to the community and county.
