Kenneth Ray Covington, 75, passed away at home after a lingering illness on Thursday, September 10, 2015. Ray was a member and usher at Central Baptist Church of Bearden. He was an avid Lady Vols Basketball fan and loved to talk basketball with his friend Robin Duncan. He loved to play golf and looked forward to the yearly men's golf trip. Ray retired from Penn Tank Lines as Regional Manager. After retirement he worked at Rose Mann Funeral Home as a funeral associate. He was the first person to receive the Mayor's Merit Award in 1983 for implementing a Hazmat Team for Knoxville and the surrounding area. Ray loved laughter and never met a stranger. He was preceded in death by father and mother, Lester W. V. Covington and Pearl Gray Covington Mashburn; and his brother, Marvin K. Covington; grandparents, Joseph R. and Sallie Compton Covington; and mother-in-law, Laverne Towle Hamilton; and sister-in-law, Judy Towle.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel. Graveside services, officiated by Dr. Wendell Boertje, will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m. at Edgewood Cemetery located behind Gallaher Baptist Church.
