“Sunday Burial – Funeral services for Rev. William Felga Bledsoe Sr., 105, are to be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethesda Baptist Church. The body is at Hayward Funeral Home. Dr. James R.C. Pinn is to officiate. Burial is to be in Smith Cemetery.
Bledsoe, one of the oldest residents of Harrison County and a retired teacher and minister, died Wednesday night at Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Surviving are two sons, W.F. Bledsoe Jr., Fort Worth, Harold E. Bledsoe, Detroit, Mich., five grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and three nieces.”
An expanded obituary for WILLIAM FELGA BLEDSOE SR. was published Thursday, January 9, 1964 by The Marshall News Messenger as follows:
"W.F. BLEDSOE DIES AT 105
William Felga Bledsoe, retired teacher and ordained Baptist minister, who was born in the days of slavery in Carthage, and who was believed to be 105 years old, died Wednesday night at Memorial Hospital. He made his home at 1003 West Grand.
A granddaughter, Mrs. Zeta Sikes of Houston, said that he had often told of being brought to Marshall with other Negro families when he was a child by the Union solders.
He received his education in Marshall and was the oldest living ex-student of Wiley College and the oldest living graduate of Bishop College, where he received both the Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees.
He taught for many years in Harrison County and Marshall schools and was also an ordained Baptist minister and served many small churches in the area. He made his home in Marshall and during the years had traveled extensively. He was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church. He was the second son of John Bledsoe and Eliza Bledsoe.
He was well regarded by all who knew him.
Funeral services are to be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethesda Baptist Church with Dr. James R.C. Pinn, pastor, officiating. Burial is to be in Smith Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hayward Funeral Home.
