Joshua Ballard was a son of Daniel & Hannah Ballard. He was born in about 1826 in Madison County, Alabama. His family later moved to St. Clair County, Alabama where on Sept. 20, 1843 he married Louiza (Louisa) ("Lou") Bolton (or Boulton), daughter of Rev. John Bolton/Boulton.

Between 1852 and 1855 Josh & Lou Ballard and their four children moved west and settled in the Martins Mill Community of Van Zandt County, Texas.

Joshua enlisted to fight in the Civil War for the Confederacy in 1863. He served as a teamster in Terrell's Regiment, Company D, 37 Texas Cavalry.

According to W. B. Ballard, Joshua contracted pneumonia and died while visiting his brother Daniel in Paris, Texas between 1866 and 1870. Josh's parents and siblings lived in adjoining Red River County, so it may have been there where he died. His mother was still alive at the time of his death.

The exact cemetery of Josh's burial is as yet unknown.
