Raymond C. Gantter

Raymond C. Gantter, 71, of 241 Scottholm Terrace, died Wednesday at his home after a long illness.

Mr. Gantter was a life resident of Syracuse. He was a graduate of North High School. He attended the University of North Carolina and was a 1939 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Syracuse University. Mr. Gantter was program manager of WFBL Radio from 1941 to 1953, when he became copy chief and radio and television producer for Coe Advertising Agency.

From 1955 to 1961, Mr. Gantter served as assistant executive director of the Community Chest and executive director of the Community Foundation.

Mr. Gantter retired in 1976 as vice president of Marine Midland Central Bank after 15 years with the company.

Mr. Gantter was a member of the Metropolitan Commission on Aging and served as chairman of its agency relations committee.

He was a member of the advisory committee of the Thursday Morning Roundtable, Literacy Volunteers, Meals on Wheels and the Gem and Mineral Society of Syracuse.

Mr. Gantter was a former chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Syracuse and Onondaga County, the Christmas Bureau and the United Way Speakers’ Bureau and was a former vice chairman of the Syracuse Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was a former president of the Volunteer Center, the Syracuse Friends of Chamber Music, the City/County Parent Teachers Association and the NAACP.

Mr. Gantter was a former trustee and assistant secretary of WCNY public television and radio.

Mr. Gantter was a former member of the boards of the Salt City Playhouse, the Crusade for Opportunity, the Child and Family Service, the United Nations Associates and the Onondaga Council on Alcoholism. He was a former treasurer of Priority One and was a former member of the Citizens Council for Urban Renewal, the East Side Neighborhood Council and the Metropolitan Council of Arts and Sciences.

Mr. Gantter served with the 1st Infantry Division in Europe during World War II and was the recipient of the Silver Star, the Purple Heart and the French Fourragere.

Surviving are his wife, the former Rietta Trimm; a son, Geoffrey T.; a daughter, Sukey M. Poetzsch; his mother, Mrs. Herman L. Gantter; a brother, Richard H. of Constantia; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be private.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel.
