EXETER, N.H.: Jean Davis Foster, 96, died at her home at Riverwoods in Exeter, N.H. on August 27, 2015. Born on March 24, 1919 in Waltham. She was the daughter of Harold and Lila (Anwyl) Davis. Jean lived for many years in Andover, Mass. and in Long Boat Key, Fla. As an undergraduate at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst she earned her private pilot's license at the age of 19 under the Civilian Pilot Training Program, which trained fliers some of whom later served in World War II. Also in college, she was the captain of the women's field hockey team and an avid tennis player. A lifelong sports fan, she was as easily enthralled by a Bruins game or a Wimbledon final. When raising her children in Andover, Jean managed the Christ Episcopal Church thrift shop and taught dyslexic children in the Andover public schools. Jean always enjoyed being with young people and was a leader in the Campfire Girls. In recent years she formed lasting attachments with nurses, aides and other young women working in her retirement community. An English major and music minor in college, Jean devoured novels throughout her life at a torrid pace of three or four a month. She had opinions about many classic and contemporary novelists but generally favored women writers. She was the widow of Robert M. Foster and Albert D. Foster
