Arthena Elizabeth McBride was born at Waveland, Yell County, Arkansas on 12 Jan 1857 to Robert P. and Margaret Lucinda McBride. She was their second child. Her parents and grandparents were among the early settlers of Yell County when the county was formed in 1840. She was married to Thomas Hearlson Nelms on 8 Nov 1872 in Waveland by Justice of the Peace William Smith.

She was the mother of 11 children:
William Newton Nelms B: 24 Nov 1873
Nathaniel Lafayette Nelms B: 22 Nov 1875
John Morris 'Duge' Nelms B:13 May 1878
Robert Franklin Nelms B: 07 Apr 1880
Samuel Pettis Nelms B: 25 Apr 1882
Margaret Savana Nelms B: 20 Oct 1884
Alice L 'Nora' Nelms Caldwell B: 27 Apr 1886
Thomas Jefferson Nelms B: 24 Aug 1888
Winfred Harold Nelms B: 05 Feb 1890
Leona Lurinda Nelms James B: 14 Aug 1893
William Everet Nelms B: 05 Nov 1896

After the death of her husband in 1919, Arthena moved into the home her daughter Leona Nelms James. In 1928, she moved with Leona's family - and the family of her son Tommy Nelms - to the Pumphrey community in Runnels County, Texas. Tommy passed away in 1933 and Arthena died the following year. She was carried back to Yell County and buried next to her husband in Rock Creek Cemetery.

Known as 'Theeny' or 'Aunt Theena' to her family, she kept in close contact with her siblings, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews even as they dispersed across the country from Florida to California. Her photo collection of these family members both preserves family history and testifies to her love for her family.
