After the death of her husband in 1919, Arthena moved into the home her daughter Leona Nelms James. In 1928, she moved with Leona's family - and the family of her son Tommy Nelms - to the Pumphrey community in Runnels County, Texas. Tommy passed away in 1933 and Arthena died the following year. She was carried back to Yell County and buried next to her husband in Rock Creek Cemetery.
Known as 'Theeny' or 'Aunt Theena' to her family, she kept in close contact with her siblings, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews even as they dispersed across the country from Florida to California. Her photo collection of these family members both preserves family history and testifies to her love for her family.
