Johnny A. Hedge, 84, of Weiner, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015, at St. Bernards Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 25, 1931, at Dyersburg, Tenn., to the late John and Cora Hedge. He lived in Arkansas most of his life.

He was a graduate of Harrisburg High School. He attended Illinois State University in Chicago, earning a degree in industrial engineering. He was a veteran serving with the 87th Infantry Regiment in Germany for two years and served 14 months in Korea. He was honorably discharged at New York with the rank of first lieutenant. On Dec. 24, 1959, he married Martha Jean Houk. From this union three sons were born, Ronald, Gene Alton and Bruce Keith. Johnny was a welder and had operated a welding shop in Tilton and Fisher and, in 1970, built a shop in Weiner. In 1972, the family moved to Weiner, and the welding shop was incorporated under the name of Hedge Manufacturing Co. Inc. and still operates today as Hedge Auger Service Inc. Johnny Hedge was of the Baptist faith and an active Mason. He was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason in Cardinal Lodge No. 677 at Weiner on Jan. 31, 1980. He served the lodge as worshipful master twice and as secretary for many years. His love for the fraternity inspired him to excel in other appendant bodies of the fraternity. He had served in a leadership position in many of these appendant bodies too numerous to list. Some of the many accomplishments and honors he achieved throughout his Masonic career were: He served as most illustrious grand master of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Arkansas in 1991-92, most excellent grand high priest of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Arkansas 1993-94. He was a charter member and past governor of Arkansas York Rite College No. 142 and received the highest honor of the York Rite Sovereign College of North America, the Order of the Purple Cross in 1994. He received the Grand Encampment of Knight Templars, Knight Commander of the Temple Award in 2005. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and had received the honor of Knight Commander of the Court of Honor in 2009. He served as the personal representative of the grand master of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Arkansas in 2009.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jean Hedge; two sons, Ronald Hedge (Diane) and Gene Alton Hedge, all of Weiner; a grandson, Jonathan Scott Hedge of Wynne; and a great-grand-daughter, Avery Ann Hedge of Wynne.

He was also preceded in death by a son, four brothers and a sister.

A celebration of his life was held at Gregg-Langford Bookout Funeral Home with burial with military honors and masonic rites in Union Grove Cemetery near Tilton.
