US Senator
In 1861, he enlisted as a private in Company E, Eighteenth Texas Cavalry and rose to lieutenant; he fought in the battles of Franklin and Nashville under John Bell Hood. In 1873, he and business partner W. H. Lemmon acquired considerable land, and developed the Oak Lawn section of Dallas. Beginning in 1892, he served one term in the Texas House of Representatives, one four-year and two two-year terms in the state Senate, and another term as representative.
