Upon arriving in America, Edward found work in New Jersey. He contracted malaria there and moved to New York City for health reasons. There he became friends with architect Ehrick Rossiter, who was building a home in Washington, Connecticut. Rossiter invited him to move to Washington, where he built the foundations of Rossiter's home and the stone walls around it. He would stay with Rossiter for 50 years as caretaker, living in the estate carriage house and raising a family of 10 children with his wife.
In the spring of 1885, Edward Coll escorted his young nephew Eamon de Valera to Ireland. Eamon lived with his grandparents where he grew up to become the President of the Irish Republic.
