Rachel was a niece and namesake of Andrew and Rachel Jackson, born after her father Col. Thomas Hutchings and her mother, Catherine Donelson (Rachel Jackson's sister), had settled in the Nashville area.

She married James Smith Rawlings in 1806, had four children and was widowed when her husband passed away after about 14 years of marriage. The family then moved to Alabama; Jackson, MS; and finally settled in Jackson, Madison Co., TN, where her son John Hutchings Rawlings married Sarah Jane Hays, her mother's sister's granddaughter. Her mother Catherine and her brother Christopher Hutchings also had moved to Jackson. Both her mother Catherine Donelson Hutchings and her sister Jane Donelson Hays attended the wedding of their grandchildren.

After Rachel's death in Jackson at age 62 (1846), her son John Hutchings Rawlings and his family moved to Memphis where they are found in the 1850 Census.
