James' brief obituary was hand written from the Stanley N.D. papers.

Death of James Bolen.

"On Monday of this wk occurred the death of James Jaret Bolen of this city from gangrene.
Deceased was born April 12, 1835 and died June 21, 1915, aged 80 years, 2 months, 9 days.
Mr. Bolen was an ex-confederate soldier, having served under Gen. Longstreet for 3 years when he was sent home."

His pension application of 4 May 1888 stated he was shot in the hand rendering his wrist stiff and unable to close his hand after that. This was during the Seven Days Battles following the Battle of Malvern Hill during July, 1862.

By 1880 he and wife Barbara where in Ceasar Creek, Greene, Ohio and by his pension he was back in Sperryville. By 1900 wife Barbara was with daughter Eller (Terrence) Maddock in Prairie, Edgar, Illinois.
