Reverend Samuel C. Willis was born February 10, 1925 in Big Stone Gap, Virginia and died on Monday, September 7, 2015 at 5:00 P.M. in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Sam was the son of Earl and Edna Willis and was the last of 4 children. Sam spent most of his youth in Harlan County, Kentucky and attended Loyall High School.

Sam left home in 1942 to attend civilian radio school. A year later he was drafted into the United States Army Air Force. Sam served in the Southwest Pacific as a radio operator on a B-25 Mitchell Bomber and flew thirty-six combat missions before returning home. At the close of World War II, Sam begin attending The University of Tennessee with hopes of becoming an engineer. It was during this time, however that Sam began hearing a call from God.

After a year, Sam relinquished his studies at UT and enrolled at Asbury College, followed by the Asbury Seminary. After several years of theological training, Sam entered the ministry in the United Methodist Church where he served for over 60 years. During his religious service, he met the love of his life, Miss Linda Grossman. They married in May of 1979. At this, Sam gained one stepdaughter in addition to his three biological children.

Sam had many hobbies in addition to his life as a minister. Some of his interest included a patent on a self-cooling drink can in 1974 as well as a patent on a magnetic golf club in 1996. Sam was an avid WKU sports fan and owned Red Towel Seats for many years. He also had a deep love for music. Although Sam was talented in many areas, his deepest commitment was to God, his family, and his friends. He was a man of immense integrity and will be greatly missed.

Sam is preceded in death by his two sons Sammy and Blane Willis.

Sam is survived by his loving wife Linda; his daughter Sherry Lewton of Stafford, Virginia; his step daughter Debbie Powell of Smith Mills, Kentucky; sister Caroline Spurlock, Middlesboro, Kentucky; his step granddaughter Jennifer Darnell of Springhill, Tennessee; his grandson Danny Lewton of Floyd, Virginia; as well as his other grandson Joel Lewton of Bristow, Virginia; and step grandson Aaron Powell of Smith Mills, Kentucky.

His memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at State Street United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at J. C. Kirby & Son Lovers Lane Chapel, Bowling Green, Kentucky. Burial will be in the Bowling Green Gardens. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his honor to State Street United Methodist Church.
