Betty L. Backensto, 87, of Mansfield, died Sunday, September 6, 2015 at OhioHealth MedCentral Mansfield. Born September 9, 1927 in Mansfield, she was one of 12 children born to Omar A. and Bertha (Harvey) Backensto. Betty was a "Florence Nightingale" of sorts and played an important role in her family. She helped care for her parents for many years and after their death, Betty still continued to help care for her neighbors and her sister-in-law who had lost her legs. She greatly enjoyed the 16 years she had with her cat and also enjoyed doing word search puzzles and watching TV when her eyesight was better. During her time at Mifflin Care, Betty enjoyed playing Bingo, listening to music, going to exercise class, and visiting with her sister, Ethel, who came to visit almost daily.

She is survived by her sister, Ethel McKim of Ashland; sisters-in-law, Betty Backensto of Mansfield and Trudy Backensto of Ashland; and numerous nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Howard, Francis Eugene "Jake", Omar "Bus", Russell "Rutt", Robert "Jim", Charles, and Richard Backensto and sisters, Pauline Tucker, Mary Leather, and Martha Backensto.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
