John T. Deacon, 86, of Yankton, passed away July 26, 2006 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton. Mass of Christian burial was held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, July 29, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton with Msgr. James E. Mortimer officiating.

Visitation was Friday, July 28, from 4 to 9 p.m., with rosary at 7 p.m., followed by a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. at Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton. A funeral memorial service will held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church, Varina, IA, with Rev. Tom Hart officiating. Burial will be in St. Columbkille Parish Cemetery in Varina, IA.

John Thomas Deacon was born on July 28, 1919, in Fonda, IA, to parents Henry Joseph Deacon and Elizabeth Ann (McLaughlin) Deacon. He was the fifth of six children. He attended high school in Fonda, IA.

John married Dorothy Pearl Stoulil on May 21, 1940. They spent many years farming, as well as raising and educating their 12 children. John died on July 26, 2006 at Avera Sacred Heart Medical Center in Yankton.

John spent his many years as a devout Catholic and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He attended Mass regularly, enjoyed a daily prayer life. He was a devoted husband to Dorothy for 66 years, and was a caring father to their four sons and eight daughters, as well as to the spouses and children of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

John spent many years farming and raising livestock, which is something that he enjoyed very much. He had a very special love of horses and the Old West. John and Dorothy farmed across Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota.

John is survived by his sisters, Matilda Sylvester of Portland, OR, and Josephine Fox of Westminster, CA; his sons, Theodore "Ted" (JoAnn), Clarke (Jeane), Rodney "Rod" (Kay), and Jonathon "Johnny" (Connie); his daughters, Linda (Daryl), Mary (Ray), Dorothy "Dixie" (Dave), Elaine, Patricia, Barb (Marty), Sonia "Sam" (Vitalis "Mike") and Gina (David); as well as 36 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Dorothy; his parents, one brother, two sisters, and three great-grandchildren.

Pall attendants were the first-born daughters from each of John's 12 children: Maureen Reyno (Linda and Daryl), Jennifer Hermsen (Ted and JoAnn), Angela "Angie" Simich (Clarke and Jeane), Rebecca "Beci" Deacon (Rod and Kay), Erin Robbins (Mary and Ray), Molly Novosad (Dixie and Dave), Amanda Strain (Johnny and Connie), Sara Rohde (Barb and Marty), Veronica Gaidelis (Sam and Mike), Charity Hilbrich (Gina and David), Elaine Tucker (for Alexis Tucker), and Patricia Deacon (daughter).

Pallbearers were the first-born sons from each of John's 12 children: Rustin Stephenson (Linda and Daryl), Peter Deacon (Ted and JoAnn), Jeffrey Deacon (Clarke and Jeane), Royce "Butch" Deacon (Rod), Jonathon Deacon (Jon and Connie), and Matthew Hilbrich (Gina and Dave). Honorary pallbearers are Colin Tucker and Levi Rohde.
