Enlisted and was Mustered into service as a Private in Company C. 9th New York Infantry(Hawkins Zouaves) on May 12,1861,for two years service at the age of 24.He was promoted to Corporal of the Company on June 1,1861,then to Sergeant on September 1,1861,and finally to Regimental Sergeant Major on May 1,1862.He was captured in action on September 17,1862,at the Battle of Antietam,Maryland,and was later paroled and exchanged,enabling him to rejoin the Regiment in November of 1862.He was mustered out of service with the Regimental Staff on May 20,1863,at New York City,New York.He re-enlisted on September 18,1863,for three years service in the 35th New Jersey Volunteer Regiment,"Cladek's Zouaves,"and was mustered into service as Captain of Company I. of that Regiment on the same date,serving with them until his Company was mustered out of service on July 20,1865.Following the war he was a member of the Lincoln Post No.11 of the Grand Army of the Republic.Photo shows him while serving as Captain of the 35th New Jersey Volunteer Regiment.
