This afternoon, at 12:30, at the residence, 123 West Wayne street, occurred the death of Mr. Calvin Anderson. Mr. Anderson was one of the most prominest and highly esteemed of Fort Wayne's citizens. Although 94 years of age, he possessed the vigor of earlier years. bronchitis was the direct cause of the death.
Mr. Anderson has been a resident of this city for about forty-five years. He leaves to mourn his loss four children; Mrs. Edward Evans, of West Wayne street; Mrs. George Ely, of East Berry Street; Mrs. Henry Shanklin, of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Eli G., of this city.
Calivin Anderson, a venerable and honored citizen of this city, has been a witness of its growth and a participant in its commercial eneterprises for the past half century. he was born at Manchester, Benninton county, Vt., July 3, 1803, son of Andrew and Sarah (Sexton) Anderson, natives of the Green Mountain State. The father was born in 1760 and died in 1816; the mother was born in 1769 and died in 1837. Of their six children Mr. Anderson was the last surviving.
At the age of 12 years he came to Ohio with his parents and remained on the farm until he was 21, when he embarked in the hotel business, which he followed for thirty years. nine years of that period was spent in Fort Wayne, where he came in 1846. In 1855 he opened a grocery and provision store, which he conducted sucessfully for twelve years and then retired from active business life. He was a pioneer in the settlement of Ohio and also one of the early settlers in this city. He was married April 13, 1828, to Rebbecca Lybarger, born in Pennsylvania June 26, 1803, and until her recent death they were known, honored and esteemed as the oldest couple in the city. There were six children born of this union-Laura, Ann Lydia, Sarah Ann, Mary Eliza, Theresa, Calvin K., and Ell G.
Mr Anderson was a member of the First presbyterian church. He cast his first presidential vote for John Quincy Adams in 1824, and voted for Geo. W. H. Harrison in 1836 and 1840. He has been a republican since the organization of the party.
