Chinese Leader. Served as President of the People's Republic of China from 1959 to 1968. Because of his differences with Mao Zedong on China's economic policies (particularly in the aftermath of the Great Leap Forward), he was purged during the Cultural Revolution and imprisoned under terrible conditions, which led to his death from medical neglect in 1969. After Deng Xiaoping came into power, he was rehabilitated and given a state funeral in May 1980, more than a decade after his death.
