He was born Jan. 18, 1959, in Warren, the son of the late Elmer Willard Smith Sr. and Geneva Smith.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Sadie Adell Smith and Earla Willard Smith.
Elmer was a 1978 graduate of Mathews High School, where he was an offensive lineman for the Mustangs. He was employed in maintenance at Techno-Cap in Warren. Elmer had been a 4-H advisor on the Saddlehorse committee for many years. He will be terribly missed by the dozens of children that he mentored in the love of all animals and farming. He had a passion for working on the family farm. He was a bee keeper and raised horses, cows, chickens, turkeys, goats, lambs, pigs and assorted nieces, nephews and friends. He was pied piper of all things living but, was petrified of spiders.
He is celebrated by his wife and best friend of 33 years, Cheryl Ann Chepke Smith, whom he chose and adored; as well as his only child, Elmer Willard “Will” Smith III, who is a Navy recruiter in northwest Ohio. He also leaves in loving memory, his brothers and sisters, Sandra Ann Case Hoop (Dan) of Antrim, Frederick Del Smith (Carol) of Berlin Center, Adell Lee Smith Clouse (Dr. Roger) of North Jackson, Jean Marie Smith Ramsey (Johnny) of Pensacola, Fla., and William Alan Smith (Shelley) of Farmdale.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mahoning County Saddlehorse committee.
The family requests proper attire during the services, which includes t-shirts, blue jeans and bib overalls. Boots should be clean.
Interment will be at North Jackson Cemetery.
