Death by Lightning.

The Beloit Free Press gives the following particulars of the death of Mr. Morse by lightning on Wednesday:

During the rain storm of Wednesday afternoon, Mr. William Morse, of this city, residing on Race street, was found lying dead in the road, near Mr. Nelson Clark's on the Janesville road. An examination of the body disclosed the fact that his sudden death was caused by a stroke of lightning. Dark red marks were found near one, eye, upon the upper part of his feet, and his hat was torn into shreds. Death sudden an instantaneous, was in the bolt that fell upon him. He had been at work harvesting, and the rain causing suspension of labors in the field, it is presumed he was on his way to his home in the city when he came to his death. Mr. Morse leaves a wife and three small children in very straightened circumstances, and we warmly commend them in their distress to the attention of our benevolent citizens.

The body was taken in charge by Fire Engine Company No. 1,--of which organization he was an efficient and faithful member. (Janesville Daily Gazette [Janesville, Wisconsin] 7 August 1875, Saturday, Page 4.) (Accessed and transcribed by Mary Jo 28 July 2016.)
