Gregory Paul Kelley

Gregory Paul Kelley, born to Albert and Pauline Kelley on June 1, 1952, in Lansing, MI, was 3rd of 6 children. From childhood, Gregory attended Friendship Baptist Church in Lansing with his mom, dad, and siblings. He graduated from Everett High School. He received a BA in Journalism from Michigan State University, followed by a Masters degree in Public Administration from Western Michigan University.

Gregory lived and worked as a Journalist in various cities and states before returning to Michigan where he accepted a position with the Michigan Department of Corrections as a Corrections Officer where he attained the rank of Captain before he retired on December 29, 2010. Gregory was a well-known community activist as well as an avid supporter of young people and education. He was the founder and editor of the Michigan Bulletin newspaper. After sitting down with his mother, Pauline Kelley, they both together came up with the idea of this newspaper. He volunteered his time with several organizations such as Black Men Incorporated of Greater Lansing, where he served as former President, Black Child and Family Initiative, and the local Spelling Bee Contest, to name a few.

Gregory loved life and his family, was a jokester with a very ready and infectious laugh, and was a diehard Spartan fan. Always a kind man, Gregory had a big heart and was generous to a fault.

Photography was his hobby and his passion and he was rarely seen without his camera, always recording significant events.

Preceded in death by his grandmother, Ethel Willis Stokes; his uncle, Paul Stokes; and mother, Pauline Stokes Kelley. Gregory answered the call on August 27, 2015. He leaves to cherish his memory: his father, Albert Kelley Sr.; brothers, Albert (Barbara) Kelley Jr., Darrell (Hazel) Kelley, and Marcus (Carol) Kelley; sisters, Verlecia (Kenneth) Johnson) and Tequila (Michael) Roby; uncles, Louis (Priscilla) Stokes; long time friend, Jean Chapell; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Gregory will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Black Men Inc., at P.O. Box 16237, Lansing, MI 48901. Friends may visit Mr. Kelley Thursday, September 3rd, 12 - 8 pm at Riley Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 10:30, Friday, September 4th, at Friendship Baptist Church, 2912 Pleasant Grove Rd., with visitation one hour prior to the funeral.
