James Acy McGehee Jr. passed peacefully at home Friday, Sept. 4, 2015, at age 91.
Mr. McGehee was born June 10, 1924, to James Acy McGehee Sr. and Francis Pearl Morris McGehee in Morgan.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy and had attended many reunions of LSM/LSMR veterans. His career choice and passion was education. He began his career in Mosheim as a coach, teacher and then superintendent of schools. He spent 12 years there and continued friendships with former students the rest of his life. In 1959, he moved his family to the teacherage in Godley and began 23 years of service to the schools and community as superintendent. He retired in 1982. Since then he had worked recording in hand-typed documents the history of the McGehee family, his life history and thoughts and insights he gained in his life. He loved to golf, many times with family, but also was a lifetime member of the TALG, Texas Association of Left-Handed Golfers, with whom he enjoyed tournaments and friendships. He scored his only hole-in-one at the TALG state tournament in Rockport in 1991 with his golf partners and granddaughter, Denise, as witnesses.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 52 years, Helen Parks McGehee; his wife of 10 years, Edie Faye Harbour McGehee; sisters, Mildred Neely and Jimmie Ruth Greenwood; and brothers, Harold, Willie and Ronnie McGehee.
Survivors: Sons, James Acy McGehee III and Annette of Godley, Charles McGehee and Susan of Mosheim and T.K. "Tommy" McGehee and Tammy of Gainesville; daughters, Paula Phinney and Mike of Stephenville and Connie Barnett and Douglas of Granbury. J.A. was the proud Papaw of grandchildren James Acy McGehee IV, Paula Dee McGehee, Denise Fisher and Danny, David Sanderson and Laura, Zachary and fiancee, Tiffany Truong, Taylor Smith and Kyle, Meghan McGehee and BryceSchuetz, Tori Shaeferling and Werner Paul; and great-grandchildren, James Acy "Ace" McGehee V, Ryan Sanderson, Hannah McGehee, Nolan McGehee, Brynn Fisher, Brayden Fisher and Olivia Sanderson. He is also survived by his stepsons, Lee Murray and family of California and David Murray and wife of South Carolina; and stepgranddaughter, Shanna Jannerone. J.A. loved all his family and is also survived by a sister-in-law, Nadine McGehee of Cleburne; and a multitude of nephews and nieces.
