Charlie Swanner Dies Early Monday Morning at home
Well known throughout Eastern Section of State

Charlie Swanner, 52, passed away at his home on East Queen Street about 6 o'clock Monday morning. He had been in declining health for several months, becoming more seriously ill about nine weeks ago.
Mr. Swanner was a native of Washington County, moving to Chowan County to farm, and about 14 years ago became overseer of the "Hayes" farm owned by John G. Wood, continuing in that capacity until a year or so ago.
He was well known throughout this section of the State, being frequently called upon to treat horses and mules. As director of Swanner's String Band, he and members of his family have played before countless audiences during several years when they were much in demand to provide this sort of enterainment. The group also broadcast over several radio stations.
Funeral services held at the home Tuesday afternoon were largely attended with the Rev. Frank Cale offciating. Interment was made in Beaver Hill Cemetery.
His wife, Mrs. Carrie Perry Swanner, survives, together with six children, Mrs. John Bunch, Charlie, Jr., Ernest, Helen, Joseph and Rebecca. A brother, Jesse Swanner, of London Bridge, VA., and a sister, Mrs. Stanley Cahoon, of Hickory, VA. also survive.
Active pallbearers were: Jimmy Partin, Guy Hobbs, Thomas Jackson, George Harris, H. B. Bratten and Rupert Goodwin. Honorary pallbearers were: E. W. Spires, C. T. Doughtie, Tom Jackson, Frank Ward, R. D. Dixon, Dr, L. P. Williams, Dr. W. A. Leggett, Paul Bunch, Paul Olssom, Dr. J. W. Davis, John G. Wood, George Folk, C. E. Kramer, and H. C. Brickle.
