dental practitioner here for half a century prior to his retirement in February 1951, Dr. J. George Fruehan died Saturday night after a brief illness at his home, nine days before his 77th birthday. Dr. Fruehan would have been 77 on Christmas Day. He was the father of Dr. Mortimer L. Fruehan, well-known local dentist. Dr. Fruehan received a plaque from the Scranton District Dental Society in 1952 in recognition of his 50 years of service to the dental profession. Born in South Scranton, a son of the late George and Louise Brall[sic] Fruehan, he first showed an interest in dentistry at the age of 14 when an errand boy for the McGarrah & Thomas Pharmacy. While working for the pharmacy he was a frequent visitor at the office of the late Dr. Patrick J. O'Hara in South Scranton. Later he started to assist Dr. O'Hara and in 1898 entered the Philadelphia Dental Hospital, now part of Temple University. Dr. Fruehan was awarded his dental degree in 1901 and set up an office at his home, Cedar Ave. and Willow St. He later located at 702 Cedar Ave., where he practiced about 45 years. Dr. Fruehan did postgraduate work at the University of Vienna in 1928. He married the former Miss Caroline Scheuer in 1903. His wife, a daughter of the found of Scheuer's Bakery, served on the Scranton School Board from 1931 - 1937. An avid gardener and reader, he also was a lover of good music. He was a member of Hickory Street Presbyterian Church, Schiller Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, Keystone Consistory, Washington Camp, Patriotic Order, Sons of America and a charter member of the Junger Maennerchor. Other survivors are a daughter, Miss Dorothy L Fruehan, a member of the faculty of the North Scranton Junior High School; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Hartman, this city; a brother, Herman, this city and three grandchildren. The funeral will be tomorrow at 3 P. M. from the Strauch Funeral Home, 602 Birch St., Rev. William H. Maurer, Hickory Street Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Dunmore Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 7 to 10 P. M. Members of the Schiller Lodge will conduct services at the funeral home tonight at 7.
