Robert Ray Hendrix was born in 1932 in Bulloch County and died Thursday evening September 3, 2015, at the Ogeechee Area Hospice House, he was 83.
Ray joined the Army National Guard in 1949 then mobilized the following year and served in Europe during Korean Conflict, and retired in 1992, serving 42 years, with Command Sgt Major his highest rank.
He was honored as Outstanding Soldier of Georgia through the State Merit System.
Ray was the only person from Georgia to be nominated and honored as Legionnaire of the Decade.
He was honored in Washington as National Guard Recruiter of the Year for Georgia for 2 consecutive years.
Ray served in the American Legion for over 60 years in many post, state, and national positions including Post, District, and Department Commander, Judge Advocate of Post 90 and State of GA, and elected National Executive Committeeman of GA serving 10 years.
He served a governor appointed position to the State Veterans Board through the VA Service Board for three 7-year terms; having served under three governors. Ray has also been appointed Chairman of State Veterans Board.
Through the American Legion he helped organize a transport system for veterans needing to visit VA Hospitals in Augusta and Dublin. Ray assisted in having a bus donated by VFW and organized funding through Hospital Authority of Statesboro-Bulloch County to pay drivers. The bus transports veterans to both Augusta and Dublin once weekly.
Ray worked diligently assisting in the collection of 5,000 signatures throughout community to show need/interest for a VA Clinic. He campaigned with the VA in Washington and proposed the idea to Congress, which was eventually approved. It was four years between final approval and actual dedication.
The Veterans Memorial Parkway received the name due to Ray petitioning for signatures and gained approval from County Commission, City Council & Mayor.
Through the American Legion, Ray assisted in the proposal, design, and funding the Flame of Freedom (monument) located at City Hall (both past and current locations) and the Veterans Memorial (monument) first located on Courthouse lawn, and then moved to Courthouse Judicial Annex.
With the American Legion, he has served as a contact to distribute wheel chairs, walkers and crutches to individuals in need and distributed flags to public schools.
Ray assisted with Boys State of GA (sponsored by American Legion) for over 35 years and was responsible for relocating them from Dahlonega, GA to GSU in Statesboro, GA. The program hosted boys from Georgia high schools to participate in “mock” government activities.
He was a self-taught musician, since he was a boy, playing many instruments by ear.
Ray was a member of the Eastern Heights Baptist Church.
He was a Mason and a member of the Ogeechee Lodge #213 F & AM for 50 years and a member of the Statesboro Shrine Club.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Delmar Hendrix and Florrie Irene Johnston Hendrix, a sister and brother-in-law, Carrie Bell and Carl Deal and a sister-in-law, Betty Hendrix.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Jones Hendrix of Statesboro; two daughters and a son-in-law, Diane and Donald Long and Jennifer Kennedy all of Statesboro; a son Mike Hendrix of Statesboro; 10 grandchildren, Garth Long, Daniel (Christie) Long, Matthew (Stephanie) Hendrix, Kathryn Hendrix, Elizabeth Hendrix, Will (Jessica) Kennedy, Wynn Pearson, Witt Kennedy, John Howard, Jake Howard and Julianna Kennedy; nine great grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Joann and Reggie Beasley and Marjorie and Cecil Kennedy and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Robert Delmar Hendrix, Jr. and Archie and Judy Hendrix . Many nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive visitors on Sunday from 4:00pm until 7:00pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.
Funeral services were held Monday at 11:00am in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home with Dr. Harry Sherrer officiating, assisted by Rev. Carlton Hendrix.
Interment followed in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were his grandsons. Honorary Pallbearers were all American Legion and Auxiliary members and the staff of the Statesboro VA Clinic.
