PEKIN ~ Avis Marie Hayes, 66, of 303 Midway Street, passed away at 8:35 a.m. Saturday, August 5, 2006 at the home of her son in Manito.
Born January 8, 1940 in Wishart, Missouri to Louis Tolbert and Vivian LaFerne (Lyman) Roberts, she married Glen Hayes, Jr. on February 12, 1959 in Pekin. He died January 14, 1999 in Pekin. She was also preceded in death by her parents, one sister (Mino Sharp), and one brother (Louis Roberts, Jr.).
Surviving are three sons, Allen G. (Coyla) Hayes of Manito, and Robert C. (Michele) Hayes and Clinton L. Hayes, both of Pekin; one daughter, Shari M. (Jon) Dolen of Green Valley; eleven grandchildren; one sister, LaFerne (Huey) Knapp of Prim, Arkansas; and one brother, Charley (Jean) Roberts of Sutter Creek, California.
Avis worked the counter and finished donuts for Mister Donut in Pekin. She also worked for Pekin Public Schools District 108 as a custodian at Sunset School. She last worked in the bakery of Mr. K's Supermarket on North 8th Street and later at their Douglas Center store until she retired.
She was a member of First Assembly of God in Pekin, where she was a former member of the choir, a member of the King's Kids board, and a Sunday school teacher.
Avis enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 9, 2006 at the First Assembly of God in Pekin. The Rev. Quinn McKenzie will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin.
