After graduating from high school, LaVerne came to Indianapolis, where she graduated from Indiana Business College. It was then, while in Indianapolis, that she met her husband,Lawrence, they were married on August 16, 1941. They lived near Glenns Valley for 60 years.
LaVerne was very active in local politics, where she worked in the Indiana State Legislator and for the Indiana State Highway. After leaving politics, LaVerne spent 26 years working for the Marion County Health Department.
In college, she was member of Omega Nu Tau sorority and recently, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Julia Watkins Brass Chapter in Crown Point.
LaVerne was a two time cancer survivor. She loved to travel, seeing most of the United States, parts of Europe, Mexico, Asia and Africa.
LaVerne felt it was important to see our presidents when they came to the area. She saw several, including Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, and John Kennedy. When Kennedy came to Indianapolis, LaVerne took her mother to see him, outside the Claypool Hotel, where he kissed her mother’s hand. She also saw Jimmy Carter at a campaign event while running for president. In later years, after moving to Crown Point to be close to her son and his family, she met Hillary Clinton in Valparaiso, Indiana.
She was also a fan of the Indy 500, attending more than 50 years in a row.
LaVerne is survived by her son, Dennis R. (Beverly Sue “Susie”) White; grandsons, Michael Ray White and Joseph Ryan White; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence A. White; son, David L. White; brothers, Stanford and Linvel Ray; and sister, Burnettia Denny.
