James (JW) Walton Bennett, 83, civic leader, businessman, member of the Williamstown City Council, and Democratic party leader, died at 2 am Tuesday at the Veterans Hospital in Leestown, Pike County, Lexington, KY; of injuries suffered July 10, 1973, when he was struck by an automobile near his home 610 North Main Street.

He was the owner of the Williamstown - Lumber and Hardware Store from 1920 to 1958 when he sold the firm.

He was a 50-year member of Grant Lodge No 85 F and AM and for 45 years was a director of the Grant County Deposit Bank. He was president of the bank from 1951 to 1954.

He was an honorary member of the State Methodist Church Board and was a member of the Williamstown United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School superintendent for many years

He was a veteran of World War I and currently was serving his fifth term on the Williamstown City Council. He was the first executive director of the Williamstown Housing Commission and was a Grant County Democratic Party leader.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Cornelia Conrad Bennett, three daughters, Mrs. Eloise Roberts - Danville, KY; Mrs. Ruth Barriers - Alexandria, VA; and Mrs. Virginia Alford Erlanger, two sisters, Mrs. P. L. Clements, and Miss Martha Bennett - Lexington, KY; a brother, F. G. Bennett - Jackson, MS; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 2 pm Friday In the Williamstown United Methodist Church.
Burial will be in the Williamstown Cemetery.
The body is at the Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 pm Thursday.
