T. Eugene "Cotton" Thompson grew up in the small town of Elmore, Minnesota, joining the Navy after high school during World War II. After the war he attended Macalester College and later became an attorney in St. Paul, Minnesota.

On March 6, 1963, Thompson's wife Carol was murdered. It was later revealed that T. Eugene hired the killer to murder Carol. The subsequent trial was a major news story with full national news coverage. T. Eugene was convicted in December, 1963 and served 19 years of a life sentence.

After his release from prison he remarried and his second wife Margaret preceded him in death. The last line of his obituary includes a quote from Oscar Wilde: "Every saint has a past, and every sinner a future."
