Charles Herbert Tillman, 89, of Springfield, died Monday evening, August 31, 2015 in Mexico, Missouri. Due to deteriorating health, he moved in November of 2014 to be with his son Charles Jr. and daughter-in-law Bonnie.
Burial at Maple Park Cemetery.
Charles was born on August 19, 1926 in Mountain Home Arkansas to Herbert and Ruth (Howard) Tillman. The family later moved to Springfield in 1935 where he completed school at what is now Central High School and later received his Bachelor of Arts Degree at Drury College. In between those two schools, Charles served with the Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific Theater.
After returning home from the war and finishing college, Charles joined his father's real estate company, Tillman Realtors, assuming ownership of the company in 1960. In his later years, he became a certified appraiser and fully retired only a few years ago.
Mr. Tillman was very active in the community of Springfield. He served on the board of directors of Systematic Savings Bank, the Springfield Regional Airport, Mercy Villa Nursing Home, the Springfield YMCA, the Springfield Board of Realtors, and the local Appraiser Society and Multilist Service. He served as President of the Springfield Board of Realtors, the Southwest Missouri Society of Real Estate Appraisers, the Multilist service, the Drury College Alumni Association, and the Drury College Booster Club. He supported his alma mater throughout his life and held season tickets for most of his life to Drury basketball games. He was an avid golfer well into his eighties and played tennis many years, introducing his son to the sport.
He married Mary Betty Smith in 1953 and their son Charles Jr. was born in 1956. Mary Betty died in 1992 and Charles later married Inez (Houston) Ellis who died in 2014.
He is survived by his son Charles H. Tillman Jr. and his wife Bonnie and their children, Holly (T.J.) Whitworth, Lauren (Tony) Zehnle, and Robert (Katie) Tillman and his four great-grandchildren. His sister Dorothy and husband Bill Pickering. Their children Cathy (Lance) Peterson, Ann (Mark) Gill, and Matthew (Leesa) Pickering and their children. He is also survived by Inez's two sons Robert Stephen Ellis and his wife Carol Ann, and Douglas Houston Ellis and his wife Tamie, as well as their children, Jessica Jo Ellis, Stacie Ellis Bertucci, Benjamin Houston Ellis, Jared Kyle Ellis, Chad Stephen Ellis, Mark Newes, Lindsey Jackson, and Jason Wicker and their spouses.
