Dennis Lee Thurman 75 of Roanoke formerly of Richmond, died Thursday August 27, 2015. He was preceded by his parents, Adelaide W. and David M. Thurman, Sr., and a brother, Richard W. Thurman.

He is survived by his son, Kevin L. Thurman and his wife Maria; three grandchildren, Mary Frances, Niko, and Gabriella; four siblings, David, Mary Lois, Robert, and Betty; seven nieces, Rosemarie, Patty, Lynn, Laurie, Tracie, Michelle, and Robin; and three nephews, Sandy, Michael, and Ritchie.

Dennis “Pop-Pop” was a loving and devoted father, and grandfather with a kind and generous soul. He was a graduate of John Marshall High School in Richmond, where he was a member of Co. F of the Cadet Corps. He served in the United States Marine Corps and retired from General Motors Acceptance Corp. as a District Sales Representative.

He was a avid spokesperson for the cancer society, speaking at many high schools about his laryngectomy and the dangers of smoking. Even with this condition, he was never at a loss for words. He loved the game of golf and the great outdoors, especially living in the mountains. We will miss him very much.

He was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church in Roanoke, where the Memorial Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, September 4, 2015, at 631 N Jefferson St, Roanoke, VA 24016, for his friends and family here in the Roanoke area. A Memorial Mass will also be held 10 a.m. Saturday, September 5, 2015 at the Catholic Church of the Redeemer, 8275 Meadowbridge Rd, Mechanicsville, VA 23116. Inurnment will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at Augusta Memorial Park, 1775 Goose Creek Road, Waynesboro, Virginia 22980. In lieu of flowers please make donations in his memory to St. Andrews Catholic Church, 631 N. Jefferson Street, Roanoke, Va. 24016.
