One of the saddest tragedies to befall this community took place last Friday evening, when Bertram Frederick Kalfell, thirteen years of age, was drowned in the Kempton pond, south of Terry, where most of our younger population goes to swim.
The boy was in the water more than an hour before brought out and everything possible was done to revive him but without result and it is thought the drowning was caused from cramps or his heart failed.
Funeral services were held from the Community Church Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock by Rev F B Gigliotti and interment made in the Terry cemetery.
The church was packed with friends of the deceased and of the family who came to pay their respect to a boy who had met an untimely and unfortunate demise just at the eve of manhood. The minister preached a pathetic and strong sermon while Mrs J W Turnbull at the piano and Mesdames D C Bradley and F N Weed sang "Safe in the Arms of Jesus." The floral offerings were many and beautiful.
Pallbearers were friends and playmates of the deceased, they being, Fritz Weed, Allan Wasvig, Jack Hurley, Bernard Thomas, Leith Culver and Jack Brubaker.
Bertram Frederick Kalfell was born in Terry on the 29th of December, 1917 and had spent most of his time on the Kalfell Ranch near Zero and in Terry, he having moved with his parents to Terry this spring, when his father retired from the ranching business.
Besides his playmates and friends, the deceased leaves to mourn his death, his parents, Mr and Mrs G G Kalfell and three sisters and brothers.
