On Tuesday, September 1, 2015, Dr. Mary Livingston Stegall-Engel passed away after many years of suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

She was born in Wilmington, NC, but considered Northwest Florida her home, as this is where her family and she moved in the year 1959.

As an adult, she eventually moved to DeFuniak Springs, Florida, where she found comfort in the small town atmosphere. It was there that she met her husband, Michael Joseph Engel. Mary loved the historical home that she and Michael bought, but she found the stairs in the home were becoming increasingly difficult to climb as her arthritis grew worse. Michael then built her a handicap accessible home on Lake Holley Circle.

Mary was grateful to have lived in a Christian home. Her parents, Edith and Elliott, were Christians. As a child, she was very active in the Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday school and played the piano for the songfest each Sunday. She also played the organ in a small chapel when her services were needed.

Mary was gifted in the academic area and received many honors. She was a proud member of the DAR. She began college in Winston Salem, North Carolina at Salem College. She married after finishing her third year. She later graduated from Furman University and earned her Masters and Doctorate from the University of North Carolina. She began her teaching career at Pryor Jr. High and served one year as guidance counselor at Choctawhatchee. She later transferred to Okaloosa-Walton Junior College, which became Northwest Florida State College, where she taught Psychology for many years.
During this time, she also established a part time practice in clinical psychology. She always referred to herself as a “people person” and received much pleasure from teaching and providing psychological services.

Mary’s real joy was her family. She lost her oldest son when he was a young adult and looked forward to being reunited with him in heaven. All of her four children graduated from college, and her younger son obtained a Ph.D. from Florida State University.

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Edith and Elliott Livingston and her son, C.R. Stegall III. She is survived by her loving and supportive husband, Michael Joseph Engel, her sister, Jane Popple, and her children Edith Valdez Myers, Elliott Scott Stegall, and Jane Meredith Barter-Stegall.

Flowers are appreciated.

Graveside services will be held Friday September 4, 2015 at Heritage Gardens Cemetery in Niceville Florida beginning at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Odom officiating.
