Justin "Hammer" Benfield, age 71, of Plumtree Creek, went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Saturday, August 29th, 2015 in Colorado while visiting his son. A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late Thomas Andy and Clara Moody Benfield. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, John Wesley Benfield; sisters: Nola Benfield and Martha Calloway; brothers: George, Donald and James Benfield; grandchildren: Cheyenne Calloway and Randall Thompson and a nephew, Wayne Benfield. Hammer loved hunting ginseng, fishing with his kids, coon hunting and gathering branch lettuce and ramps.

Hammer never met a stranger, everyone was a friend to him and he always left them with a smile. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was always there for them to lend a helping hand or a dollar to get some candy, never asking for anything for himself. He will always be remembered as the most kind, generous and giving man for many years to come.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 12 years, Gwendolyn Gwyn Benfield of the home; daughter, Lisa Harmon and husband, Dennis, Jr., of Newland; sons: Ronnie Benfield of Land Harbor, Mark Benfield of Colorado and William Benfield and wife, Angela, of Kingsport, TN; step-children: Wendy Thompson, Seretta Calloway and Freddie Ross; siblings: Dora Calloway and husband, Joe, of Plumtree, Pat Scarlett and husband, Tony, of Thomasville, Bill Benfield and wife, Chenille, of Plumtree, Hazel Calloway and husband, Mace, of Plumtree, Joe Hardy Benfield of Morganton and Katie Benfield and husband, Charles, of Thomasville, Thomas Benfield, Jr. and wife, Irene, of Plumtree and Myrtle Burleson and husband, Sam, of Newland; grandchildren: Taylor McKinney, Connie Benfield, Eden Benfield, Kennedy Hubbard, Takota Benfield, Austin Benfield,
Matthew Thompson, Mattius Thompson, Joe Calloway, Lila Calloway, Sydney Calloway, Bella Ross and Jasmine Ross; great-grandchild, Zechariah Benfield; half sister, Francis Shehan of Marion; step-grandchildren: Laura Thompson and Selena Calloway and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind the many friends he made over the years either by a chance encounter or through family.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 6th in Yellow Mountain Baptist Church. Rev. Bill McGuire will officiate. Burial will follow in the Yellow Mountain Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 3 p.m. prior to the funeral service at the church.
