He received a shot across the top of his head but did not leave the ranks. After the war he was a farmer with 3 orchards of select fruit trees, had a blacksmith shop on his farm and engaged in that trade as well. He was a republican, served 2 terms as justice of the peace, as township clerk, and as county assessor for 2 terms.

He married Nancy Wright in 1865, and they had eight children:
Martha Jane, Alice Arena, James Edward, Minnie Florence, Clara Isabelle, Nora Ellen, Ida Dell, and Robert Finis.

Newspaper article from Unionville Republican, April 1916
"The community was saddened Wednesday evening, April 19th, by the sudden death of Jas. H. Forbes, at his home near here. He was apparently in his usual perfect health but passed away in a few hours after an attack of heart trouble. Mr. Forbes was an old and well known citizen of this community and had many friends who join in extending the sympathy to the sorrowing ones. Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at St. John church by Rev. J.B. Lattimer, after which the remains were laid to rest in St. John cemetery."
