Actor. A handsome leading man, often cast in light comedies, he shall be best remembered for his association with Disney films. Born Dean Carroll Jones, his father was a construction worker, young Dean experienced entertainment at an early age, as a singer on his own radio program in Alabama. He dropped out of high school at the age of fifteen and went to New Orleans in an attempt to further his singing career, however he would return to Alabama and complete his high school education. He served with the United States Naval Corps during the Korean War and during this period, he entertained troops. Following the war, he resumed his career as a vocalist, prior to being discovered by Hollywood. He marked his motion picture with an uncredited part in the Paul Newman picture "Somebody Up There Likes Me" (1956) and followed this with roles of better substance in "Tea and Sympathy" (1956), "Jailhouse Rock" (1957) and "Never So Few" (1959). After several TV guest roles, he landed his own series playing the title role in the short-lived "Ensign O'Toole" (1962 to 1963). Jones co-starred in the Jack Lemmon film "Under the Yum Yum Tree" (1963) and two years later, he co-starred with Hayley Mills in Disney's "That Darn Cat!" (1965). Jones would go on to star in the pictures "Blackbeard's Ghost" (1968), "The Love Bug" (1968), "The Million Dollar Duck" (1971, he received a Golden Globe nomination), "The Shaggy D.A." (1976) and "Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo" (1977). He appeared as a cast member in the long running Broadway hit "Company" from 1970 until 1972. In addition to his career in entertainment, Jones was highly-active in charitable causes. He died of complications from Parkinson's disease.
